What is A Drug-Free & Alcohol Free Graduation Event?
The All Night Party History: In the early to mid 1980’s, a group of Ledyard High School senior class parents (endorsed by high school staff/administrators), decided that far too many graduates were hosting and/or attending graduation night parties that frequently led to dangerous behavior, ending in unsafe and even tragic consequences such as drunk driving, fatal car accidents, alcohol and/or drug poisoning, vandalism, etc.
The Ledyard parents decided to give the graduates a safe and enjoyable all-night party filled with a variety of activities and entertainment, including safe transportation to and from wherever the party was held (eliminating the influx of teen drivers on the roads on graduation night).
The Ledyard parents kept the party location a secret, so as not to tempt any mischievous graduate(s) from finding ways to sabotage or circumvent the party, as we all know creative teenagers can do!
Once party plans were finalized and expenses were known, they instituted an “assessment” per student and conducted some fundraisers to offset any additional funds needed to make this first party a success. That is how the all-night graduation party idea started in Southeastern Connecticut. Today, nearly every high school throughout the state has adopted these measures and with great success.
For the LHS Class of 2010, the tradition continues. The party committee is continuing with the plans for June 23rd after the Graduation Ceremony. The all-night party will be a truly amazing event that will WOW even a skeptical graduate. The party focus has always been to give the graduates a last time together, have fun, enjoy the camaraderie, and say their goodbyes as they move on to a new phase in their lives.
Immediately following the formal graduation ceremony, there will be a parent/graduate gathering time before they board buses that take them to the SECRET location. Plans include food, entertainment, and many other activities to make their last great gathering as the Class of 2010 a positive experience. The buses return them to LHS the next morning.
